One of Kevin Blackwell's first signings as Leeds boss, Paul brings with him to Elland Road vital experience in the art of promotion.

Twice, automatically with Sunderland and through the play-offs with Wolverhampton Wanderers, he's helped to lift his club into the Premiership and United fans will hope he can complete a unique hat-trick with them.

Blackwell admitted signing Butler was an unexpected bonus as the Manchester-born defender had been expected to stay at Wolves, but they were unable to offer him more than a year's extension to his contract and Leeds made their move with a two year deal on offer.

Solid and dependable, Wolves fans were loathe to lose the once capped Irish international after seeing him play the best football of his career at Molineux, and Leeds supporters will be happy if he can continue to perform as well.

Butler was made club captain by Kevin Blackwell.
